I ponder this question; is Reiki self-healing a meditation?
Wikipedia suggests that “Meditation can be defined as a practice where an individual focuses his or her mind on a particular object, thought or activity to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state”.
The common purpose of meditation is to release the mind from active thoughts by directing it to a single focus. This is why I often interchange the terms Reiki self-healing and meditation. Reiki self-healing promotes well-being and releases the body, mind and spirit from stress.
As a Westerner practicing these Eastern methods of mindful relaxation I incorporate the techniques in a way that suits my purpose. Therefore some may argue that it isn’t traditional. I say, who cares?
I am making it my own tradition. It works for me and that is the bottom line.
While teaching my Reiki students about the self-healing method, I may use the term “meditation” interchangeably. Students are encouraged to form their own opinions of their experiences with all the methods that I teach them.
So is Reiki self-healing a meditation?
It is what you make of it. It may be more of a healing method than meditation. But it really depends on the person and the circumstances.
When you are giving yourself Reiki because you need to heal, then it is more likely a self-healing session. If you are healthy and are doing a self-healing as preventative measures, I would say it falls in alignment with meditation.
The most important factor before starting your Reiki self-healing session is to determine the intention of it.
Why are you doing it?
When you have a reason you have laid the foundation for the outcome of the session. Your intention and the action toward its outcome definitely sets you up for a successful session. So I guess it doesn’t really matter whether it is a meditation or not. The outcome is all that matters.
