5 Signs You're No Longer a Tarot Beginner

There's a weird thing that happens when you've been learning tarot for a while. You stop feeling like a beginner, but you don't quite feel confident calling yourself experienced either. You're somewhere in the middle, wondering if you actually know what you're doing.

You might not realize it yet, but you probably know more than you think.

These 5 signs of progress might not show up every time you read tarot, but if you're starting to notice them, you've moved past the beginner stage!

1. You recognize cards before anyone tells you

When watching other tarot readers, you recognize the card before they tell you what it is. That moment of recognition will happen faster the more you practice and play with your cards. You're not reaching for the guidebook as often. (Or at all!)

This was the first sign for me! When I'd watch YouTube tarot readers lay out the cards, I could tell what they were before they would name them. It made me realize how much I actually knew. That's why I do readings on my Everyday Introvert Tarot channel too, not just teach about tarot. Watching someone read in real time is one of the best ways to build that recognition.

2. You understand the structure of a tarot deck

You know whether a card is from the Major Arcana, Minor Arcana or is a Court Card. The deck isn't just 78 random cards anymore. You notice the Tarot system and how it plays out in a reading. Knowing a card is from the Major Arcana tells you something significant is at play. A Court Card might point to a person, an energy or a situation.

3. Your tarot deck feels familiar

You understand your own deck and you're ready to explore others. Picking up a new tarot deck doesn't intimidate you anymore. You know enough to figure it out as you go. Time to explore more tarot decks!

4. You understand tarot reversals better (even if you don't use them)

A reversed card can indicate that something is off with the energy. Maybe it's blocked, hasn't presented itself yet or is something internal rather than in the outside world. Whether you read with reversals or not, it takes less time to sense when something is off with a card's energy.

5. You can identify suits in decks you've never seen before

You're beginning to recognize the Minor Arcana suits in decks you've never seen before. Some decks are more abstract than others, but more often than not, you can figure out which suit you're looking at based on the elements represented.

And here's a bonus that shows you really aren't a beginner anymore.

6. You trust your first impression

When you trust that initial message instead of relying on tarot card meanings, it's a sure sign you've moved beyond the beginner stage.

Most beginner tarot readers spend too much time feeling like they don't know enough. I hope reading this reminds you how far you've actually come, even when it doesn't feel like it.
